Online shopping will always have a bit of risk, but experience makes it easier. i try to look for real photos of the insoles and soles, not only the outside of the shoe. i also started paying attention to how websites display sizing charts for clothing.
if anyone is interested in real user experiences, i sometimes write short notes about the shops i test.

if the first order is a disaster, i prefer to move on and not waste time with support. i try to look for real photos of the insoles and soles, not only the outside of the shoe. i do not trust only the star rating, i like to see detailed photos and longer comments. for example, i compared cotton, polyester and mixed fabrics for similar clothing items. sometimes one good quality item is better than five very cheap ones. cheap frames can look nice at first but bend easily or become loose after a few weeks. for coats and blazers i usually go one size up if i want to layer sweaters under them. nobody wants pretty shoes that hurt after ten minutes of walking.
just sharing my personal feedback.
